Diploma in Theology

A two year course which can be spread over three years.  Entrance requirements for university courses are set by the University and applications for places should be made through UCAS.

Year 1

  • 1. Old Testament 1 - Introduction to the OT Prophetical and Historical Books
  • 2. New Testament 1 - The Gospels: Introduction and Theology.
  • 3. Historical Theology 1 - Revelation, God and Man or Person and Work of Christ.
  • 4. Church History 1 - The first five centuries
  • 5. A further level 1 module which may be a non-Theology module.
  • 6. Hellenistic Greek (as for 1st BD examination)

NB:- This module is optional, but essential if a student wishes to transfer to the BD course in second year.  Students wishing to upgrade to the BTh course must take an Arts module during first year.

Year 2

  • 1. Old Testament Theology – Creation, Covenant, Hope, Relationship between the Testaments.
  • 2. New Testament 2 - The Epistles: Introduction, Theology and Exegesis in English or Greek.
  • 3. Historical Theology 2 - Person and Work of Christ or The Holy Spirit, Sacraments and Eschatology .
  • 4. Church History 2 - The Reformation period.
  • 5. Philosophy of Religion with Christian Ethics.

BACHELOR of THEOLOGY

Entrance requirements for university courses are set by the University and applications for places should be made through UCAS.

This degree is a three year honours programme (when studied full-time) consisting of 18 modules in which the study of biblical languages is among a number of options within a broad range of theological subjects.

Year 1

  • 1. Old Testament 1 - Introduction to the OT Historical and Prophetical Books .
  • 2. New Testament 1 - The Gospels: Introduction and Theology.
  • 3. Historical Theology 1 - Revelation, God and Man or Person and Work of Christ.
  • 4. Church History 1 -The first five centuries.
  • 5. Elementary Hellenistic Greek OR Elementary Biblical Hebrew OR an Arts Module (options are set out in the Institute of Theology handbook).
  • 6. A further level 1 module which may be a non-Theology module.

Years 2 & 3

  • 1. Old Testament Theology.
  • 2. New Testament 2 - Introduction to Epistles and Revelation, Theology of Paul, Canon of the NT, Exegesis of selected passages (in English).
  • 3. Historical Theology 2 - The Holy Spirit, the Church, the Christian life, Eschatology and the Sacraments.
  • 4. Church History 2 - The Reformation period .
  • 5. Philosophy of Religion with Christian Ethics.
  • 6. Arts module (if not taken in Year 1) or another option.

Six further modules to be chosen from a range of options, some with prerequisites.  These options can be taken from OT, NT, CH, HT, Philosophy of Religion with Christian Ethics, Pastoral Studies, Missiology.  There is also the option of a dissertation on an approved area of study.  Not all options will be available every year.  Students should consult the Institute office for the range of options, and also the College for what is available in any particular year.

Final Honours classification is based on results of both 2nd & 3rd level examInations.

BACHELOR of DIVINITY

Entrance requirements for university courses are set by the University and applications for places should be made through UCAS.

This degree is a three year honours programme (when studied full-time)) consisting of 1 8 modules with an emphasis on the biblical languages.  All theological subjects, apart from the language courses, include an assignment (normally 2,000 words.)

Year 1

  • 1. Old Testament I - General Introduction, History of Israel, Historical and Prophetic Books.
  • 2. New Testament 1 - The Gospels: Introduction, Theology, and Exegesis.
  • 3. Historical Theology I - Revelation, God and Man or Person and Work of Christ.
  • 4. Church History 1 - The first five centuries.
  • 5. Elementary Hellenistic Greek OR (if already qualified in this subject) Elementary Biblical Hebrew.
  • 6. A further level 1 module which may be a non-Theology module.

Years 2 & 3

  • 1. Old Testament Theology.
  • 2. New Testament 2 - Introduction to Acts, the Epistles and Revelation, Theology of Paul, Canon of the NT, Exegesis of selected passages.
  • 3. Historical Theology 2 - The Holy Spirit, the Church, the Christian life, Eschatology and the Sacraments.
  • 4. Church History 2 - The Reformation period.
  • 5. Philosophy of Religion with Christian Ethics.
  • 6. Arts module (if not taken in Year 1) OR Elementary Biblical Hebrew.
